Error Detection and Correction

Master spotting errors with pro tips and tricks from Education With Hamza

Introduction

Error detection is a crucial component of English grammar exams (Federal Board, CSS, NTS, etc.), typically appearing as a paragraph worth 6 marks. This guide breaks down the complex rules into 9 simple tricks to help you identify errors in subject-verb agreement, punctuation, and sentence structure within seconds.

9 Essential Rules
1. Subject-Verb Agreement

Singular subjects must take singular verbs (usually ending in -s/es), and plural subjects take plural verbs. Collective nouns (Team, Army) are usually treated as singular.

Error: Ali call Uzma
Correct: Ali calls Uzma
2. Noun-Pronoun Matching

Pronouns must match their nouns in gender and number. For professions (Doctor, Teacher), you can use 'his' or 'her' based on context.

3. Sentence Order (Adjectives)

When using multiple adjectives, follow this order: O-S-A-S-C-O-M-P.

Mnemonic: "Only Silly Ants Sit Calmly On My Pillo" (Opinion, Size, Age, Shape, Color, Origin, Material, Purpose)
4. Tense Consistency

Do not switch between past and present within the same context. If a sentence starts in the past, keep it in the past.
